"In Your hand I entrust my spirit, When I sleep and when I wake," along with the Hebrew prayer:
"בְּיָדְךָ, אַפְקִיד רוּחִי, בְּעֵת שְׁנָתִי וְאָעִירָה, וְעִם רוּחִי גְּוִיָּתִי. יְהֹוָה לְאַרְמְנִי אֵל."
This powerful prayer, often recited before sleep in the Kabbalistic tradition, establishes a profound connection with the Divine during sleep and awakening. Each word and concept is imbued with spiritual meaning:
"בְּיָדְךָ, אַפְקִיד רוּחִי (Beyadkha afkid ruji): "In Your hand I entrust my spirit". This phrase acknowledges that the individual's soul is entrusted in the hands of the Divine during sleep. It is a total and trusting surrender to the Creator, recognizing that even in the state of unconsciousness, our spiritual essence is safe and protected.
(Be'et sh'nati ve'a'irah): "When I sleep and when I wake". This part of the prayer encompasses both states of sleep and wakefulness. It acknowledges that in every transition, in every change of consciousness, we are in the presence and care of the Divine. It also reminds us of the importance of being aware of our connection to the spiritual at all times.
(Ve'im ruji gevuyati): "And with my spirit, my body". This phrase highlights the union between the soul (ruj) and the body (gviyah). In the Kabbalistic context, it is understood that the soul is the source of life and consciousness, and it is the vehicle through which we experience the physical world. By entrusting the spirit into the hands of the Divine, it also acknowledges the responsibility to maintain harmony between body and soul.
(Adonai le'armeni el): "Lord, God of truth". This conclusion of the prayer highlights the divinity and truth inherent in this surrender. By addressing the "Lord, God of truth," the individual affirms their faith and trust in the Divine as the ultimate source of protection, guidance, and wisdom.
"In Your hand I entrust my spirit, When I sleep and when I wake. The soul is yours and the body is your creation, By your grace, I am and by your will, I exist. May my sleep be peaceful and restorative, And upon awakening, may I renew my being in You. May the angels of protection guard my rest, And the divine messengers bring your light into my sleep. May my mind be freed from worries and fears, And find peace in the dwelling of your love. Thus, immersed in the divine essence, May my sleep be a reflection of your wisdom. May my soul ascend to the higher worlds, And be nourished by the eternal light of Your Presence. In Your name, I surrender to a deep and restorative sleep, And upon awakening, may Your light guide every step of my journey. So be it."
Recite this meditation with calmness and devotion before bedtime, allowing the words and intention to lead you into a state of deep spiritual connection. May this prayer guide you towards a peaceful and restorative sleep, and upon awakening, towards a renewed awakening in the divine light of Kabbalah
